Cosmetics Basics
People
have been using cosmetics for hundreds of thousands of years. The
Egyptians buried their dead with eye shadow as far back as 10,000
B.C., and the Old Testament refers to "eye painting" (Ezekiel
23:40).
The Ancient Egyptians were fond of scented oils, and used ointments
to cleanse their skin. They marked their bodies with henna, and lined
their eyes with kohl, a dark-colored mix of various ingredients, including
burnt almonds, lead, oxidized copper, ochre, ash, and malachite. They
believed this special eyeliner would restore poor eyesight and reduce
eye infection.
Today, while we use cosmetics to enhance our appearance, many cosmetic
products also provide health benefits - allowing us not only to be
more beautiful and handsome on the outside, but also from within.
No longer are we limited to rubbing a burnt almond on our face.
Among the types of the most popular cosmetics today are lipstick,
foundation, rouge (or blusher), mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow and nail
polish. They come in every shade of the rainbow. Indeed,
the cosmetic choices available today are staggering - and there's something
for everyone, whatever your skin type, colouring, or preference.
